How to Get Energy in Sandustry
The mid-game power loop: Dry Amethelis → Florin gas → Florinol liquid → batteries that recharge with a Rocket Launcher.
Energy is Sandustry’s third currency after Gold and Fluxite. Gold buys Research. Fluxite buys grabber and hover upgrades. Energy powers late tools (Drill, Laser, Energy Siphon) and buildings that refuse to run on gravity alone — Snowmaker, Florinol Battery, and later Power Bricks. Official wiki language unlocks Energy around Research tier 5. This guide is the production chain, not a voltage spreadsheet.
Why you suddenly need power
Early buildings — Shakers, Conveyors, Pipes — run without a grid. That is why a lake factory can print gold on day one. Mid-game nodes change the rule: the Drill needs Energy to break hard stone, the Snowmaker spends Energy to freeze Water into Snow, and automated heat tools expect a charged store nearby. If you skip this page and only farm Fluxite, you will own a scanner and still bounce off Shatterstone.
Factory Level still gates some of those nodes. After Hotfix 0.5.3 the UI tells you why a tier is blocked. Read the objective before you overbuild batteries.
The Florinol chain (official order)
Community and official beginner notes agree on one recipe. Do not invert heat and cold.
- Grow or harvest Amethelis from Flowers and Planters. Petals are the feedstock — see Voidbloom and Amethelis.
- Dry the petals with Steam → Dry Amethelis. Steam is the dryer, not the Flamethrower. A Steam Dryer (Drying & Condensing research) is the clean building; a steam chimney over a petal pile is the messy version.
- Heat Dry Amethelis → Florin (gas). Heat comes from a Thermal Buffer, Lava, or a hot thermal structure. Heat turns solid → liquid → gas. You want the gas step.
- Cold-condense Florin → Florinol (liquid). Cold thermal structures, Snow, or a Condenser reverse the ladder: gas → liquid. Capture the liquid in a tank, not in an open pit that freezes into a useless slab.
- Pour Florinol into a Florinol Battery. Each battery tile stores 16 Energy. Spent Florinol hardens. Ignite the hardened fill with a Rocket Launcher to release Energy again. The Florinol is not consumed — you recharge the same liquid.
Pixel names on Florin and Florinol match this chain if a tooltip spelling drifts between Florinol / Florenol in creator videos.
Buildings and research you actually buy
| Unlock | Role |
|---|---|
| Flowers / Planter Boxes | Amethelis supply |
| Drying & Condensing (~2500 Gold) | Steam Dryer + Condenser |
| Thermal Buffer (~1000 Gold) | Heat store for the gas step |
| Florinol Battery (~1500 Gold) | First Energy tank |
| Rocket Launcher (~2000 Gold) | Re-ignite hardened Florinol |
| Energy Siphon (~1000 Gold) | Move Energy between stores |
| Power Brick (later) | Copper-mold store, distinct from Florinol |
| Snowmaker (~2500 Gold) | Spend Energy to make Snow |
| Drill (~2500 Gold) | Needs Rocket Launcher and Florinol Battery first |
Costs are launch-week catalogue numbers from the official research table. If Hotfix 0.5.3 or a later note changes a price, trust Steam — this page will follow.
Layout that does not explode the greenhouse
Keep heat and flowers on different floors. Embers ignite Moss and Flowers (Flowers and Planters). A practical stack:
- Top: Planter row + Amethelis catch → belt to a Steam Dryer closet.
- Middle: Thermal Buffer / lava-adjacent heat cell that only sees Dry Amethelis. Vent Florin upward or into a closed condenser room.
- Bottom: Cold room (Snow, Condenser, or Cryoblaster chill) dripping Florinol into battery tiles.
- Service alley: Rocket Launcher LOS on the batteries so you can re-light without walking through gas.
Use Filters so wet petals never enter the heat cell. Wet Amethelis is a different pixel than Dry Amethelis; the gas step wants dry.
Florinol Batteries versus Power Bricks
They are not the same store.
- Florinol Battery — filled with liquid Florinol from dried Amethelis → Florin → condensate. 16 Energy per tile. Recharge by igniting hardened Florinol with the Rocket Launcher. Florinol stays in the tile.
- Power Brick — copper molds filled with liquid copper, charged automatically from a compatible input. Later research. Use Bricks when you have a metal melt line; do not pour Florinol into a Brick and expect the same tooltip.
Energy Siphon moves charge between stores so a Drill on the frontier can drink from a basement battery without dragging the tile.
What Energy is for (so you stop hoarding)
Spend the first tanks on mobility and rock, not vanity lights:
- Drill — hard materials that the shovel and Gun bounce off.
- Snowmaker — renewable Snow for water when lakes are gone.
- Laser — sustained hard excavation (expensive Gold node).
- Keep a reserve so a blackout does not freeze a condenser mid-pour.
Energy is also a research spend on some late nodes (official table lists Gold, Energy, or Auralite). Do not empty every battery the night before a gated unlock.
Common failures
No gas, only ash. You heated wet petals or used fire instead of Steam for the dry step. Dry with Steam first.
Florin escapes into the sky. Gas rises. Roof the heat cell or pipe it into the Condenser. Treat Florin like Steam, not like Slag.
Liquid freezes in the pit. Too much Snow touching the Florinol puddle. Condense into a tank above the cold source, not into the snowdrift.
Battery shows Energy once, then dies forever. You forgot the Rocket Launcher recharge. Hardened Florinol is still there — ignite it. Do not delete the tile.
Drill still locked. The node requires Rocket Launcher and Florinol Battery researched, plus Factory Level. Hotfix 0.5.3 prints the missing objective.
Demo versus Early Access
The free Steam demo may stop before a full Energy wing. Early Access (2026-08-13, Steam / GOG / Microsoft Store / PC Game Pass) is where this chain is meant to run. Single-player only — you cannot share a battery grid.
Session checklist
- Amethelis farm stable (Flowers and Planters).
- Steam dryer isolated from the greenhouse fire lane.
- Heat cell + cold condenser as two rooms, not one pile.
- Florinol Battery placed; Rocket Launcher on the hotbar.
- First Energy spent on Drill or Snowmaker, not a decorative lamp.
Gold built the factory. Fluxite made you fast. Energy is how you cut the planet that gold cannot buy.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common Sandustry questions.
How do you make Energy in Sandustry?
Dry **Amethelis** with Steam, heat it into **Florin** gas, condense that into **Florinol**, and fill a **Florinol Battery**. Full chain on this page and Florin and Florinol.
Does Florinol get used up in the battery?
No. Spent Florinol hardens. Ignite it with the **Rocket Launcher** to release Energy again. The liquid stays in the tile.
How much Energy does a Florinol Battery hold?
Official wiki text: **16 Energy per tile**. Power Bricks are a separate copper store unlocked later.
When is Energy unlocked?
Around **Research tier 5**, after you have a botanical line and thermal buildings. Factory Level may still gate the node — Hotfix 0.5.3 shows why.
What should I spend Energy on first?
The **Drill** (hard rock) or **Snowmaker** (renewable snow-water). Laser is a later Gold sink. See Tools and Weapons.
Is Energy the same as Fluxite?
No. Fluxite buys upgrades. Energy powers tools and some late research. Farm Fluxite on How to Get Fluxite.
