Should You Buy Sandustry?
A launch-week buyer’s guide: demo, Game Pass, Steam, and who will bounce off the sand.
Sandustry is two days into Early Access as of August 15, 2026. The question is not “is it 1.0?” — it is not. The question is whether the pixel factory loop is worth $14.99 (or 35% off through August 27) or a PC Game Pass install. This page is a buyer’s guide, not a score. For tone and demo hours read Demo Review. For live-EA expectations read Early Access Preview. For storefront facts read Launch Week Notes.
Buy it if you like watching pixels misbehave
You will probably like Sandustry if you already enjoy Factorio-style logistics and falling-sand / Noita-ish physics, and you do not need multiplayer. The fantasy is visible: Wet Sand hits a diagonal Shaker, gold falls, slag slides, you burn the slag, you press it, the wallet ticks because a Collector actually contains the nuggets. When it clicks, an hour disappears. Launch-week Linux coverage said the same thing in fewer words.
You will also like it if you want a small-price, high-systems Hooded Horse game you can play in short sessions: one lake factory, one research node, quit. The stated EA plan is about a year of more biomes and chains, so buying now is buying a conversation with the designer, not a frozen product.
Wait (or stay in the demo) if you need a finished campaign
Stay out if you want:
- Shared or online factories — none. Single-player only.
- Xbox console or Cloud — not at launch. PC Game Pass is desktop PC only.
- A scripted 20-hour story — artifacts and ruins exist; they are not a AAA campaign.
- Spreadsheet factories without physics — sand will clog, flowers will sit on belts, a one-pixel rock will catch your hover. That is the game, not a bug you can settings-away.
- A guaranteed 1.0 date — “about a year” is a plan, not a contract (EA Roadmap).
If the free Steam demo (app 3490390) bored you after the first shaker, EA will not become a different genre. It is a larger map, faster movement, more research, Workshop, and polish on the same loop.
Demo vs Game Pass vs Steam vs GOG
| Path | Use it when |
|---|---|
| Free demo | You have never wet sand. One evening. No save transfer promise. |
| PC Game Pass | You already subscribe and play on Windows PC. Lowest cash risk for the paid build. |
| Steam | You want Workshop, achievements (16), Cloud, and the discount week. |
| GOG | You want DRM-free PC. Same factory, different launcher. |
| Microsoft Store | You live in the Xbox PC ecosystem without Steam. |
Game Pass is not “the Xbox version.” Friends on a living-room console will not find it. Cloud Gaming will not stream it until a console port exists — and none is announced.
What launch-week play actually feels like
Praise that keeps showing up: readable physics, the diagonal-shaker puzzle, slag as a second paycheck, Linux just working, UI scale and zoom. Complaints that keep showing up: leftover pixels you cannot see on the minimap, flowers seeding onto belts and growing into a permanent clog, learning-curve rebuilds, and the sense that you are the janitor of your own genius. Those are fair. Early Game Tips and Starter Factory exist to shorten the janitor phase.
The movement rewrite is a real upgrade from the demo. Hover plus phase-through means you spend less time trapped in your own box (Movement and Hover). Water is less of a cruel joke if you learn steam rain and snow burn (Snow, Firn, and Frostbed).
Money math for this week
List $14.99 / £12 / €14.99 / ¥1,480. Introductory 35% through 2026-08-27 (EU listings showed €9.74). Hooded Horse said the price might rise later in EA. If you already know you want the Workshop build, buying during the discount is the rational move. If you are unsure, Game Pass or the demo is the rational move. There is no season pass and no FOMO cosmetic shop in the launch messaging — the FOMO is the discount clock.
Mods and “I will wait for 1.0”
Waiting for 1.0 is valid. You will miss a year of the thing the EA FAQ says they want: player ideas on Discord and Steam. You will also miss breakages. Fluxloader and Workshop maps can die on a new exe. If you only play heavily modded, wait a week after each patch or keep a vanilla world (Mods).
A direct recommendation
- Yes, buy or subscribe if the demo’s shaker line made you grin and you have a PC that meets minimum specs.
- Yes, Game Pass if the subscription is already there and you play on PC.
- No, not yet if you need couch multiplayer, a console, or a finished biome list.
- Demo only if you have one hour and a maybe.
Then open How to Play and build the lake factory. The wiki will still be here when the first hotfix lands — we will put it on Launch Week.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common Sandustry questions.
Should I buy Sandustry or use Game Pass?
Use **PC Game Pass** if you already subscribe and play on desktop PC. Buy Steam/GOG if you want Workshop, a permanent license, or the launch discount. Game Pass is not on Xbox consoles.
Is the free demo enough?
Enough to know if you like diagonal shakers and sand physics. Not enough for the full research tree, hover-focused EA movement, or the larger map. Compare Demo vs Early Access.
Will Sandustry leave Early Access soon?
Developers stated about **one year** in EA, flexible. That is a plan, not a ship date. Track EA Roadmap.
Is it good on Linux?
Launch-week hands-on reported a native Linux build with UI scale and zoom. Steam lists Linux on the main app. Confirm your GPU against the spec table.
What if I hate inventory janitor games?
You will hate the flower-on-belt and leftover-pixel moments. Try the demo. If cleanup makes you quit, do not buy the larger map.
