Sandustry Snow, Firn, and Frostbed
The cold pixels that refill water — and freeze your lake if you mix them wrong.
Snow is the quiet mid-game resource that answers the question every demo veteran asks in Early Access: where does new water come from when the lake is gone? Official material text is blunt. Snow is obtained with the Cryoblaster or by digging Frostbed. When burned it creates Water. That is currently the only renewable water source in the game besides duplication tricks. This page covers Snow, packed Firn, Frostbed terrain, and the ice/lava accidents that wreck a starter factory. Pair it with Water, Ice, and Steam for the hot side of the same cycle.

Density 150 means snow will not sort like Gold (300) or sit where Lava (75) does. Filters that you tuned for slag will not automatically do the right thing with a snow belt. Test a short run before you pipe Frostbed into the refinery.
How to get Snow
Cryoblaster (Tools 3). The official tool text says it creates snow, freezes water, and solidifies lava. Point it at a workspace you can belt. Do not spray it into the wetting lake unless you want Ice.
Frostbed. Early Access exploration footage treats Frostbed as a shovel terrain — the scanner / tooltip asks for a shovel, not a gun. Shatterstone is the gun wall; do not confuse the two (Tools and Weapons). Dig Frostbed into a catch box the same way you dig Sandsoil into a hopper.
Packed Firn (solid snow) is the flamethrower footnote: dig it out before it will burn. A firn cliff is a storage problem, not a water tap, until the shovel has loosened it.
Burning Snow into Water
Flamethrower fire on loose snow produces Water. That water is real wetting fluid — one Water plus one Sand still makes two Wet Sand (Sand and Wet Sand). Factory pattern:
- Mine or cryo a snow buffer away from the lake.
- Belt or vacuum snow onto a burn grate.
- Catch the melt in a tank or pipe run.
- Deliver Water to mixers, not back onto leftover snow.
If melt lands on remaining snow, you get Ice instead of a tank. That is the whole hazard in one sentence.
Snow plus Water equals Ice
Official Snow text: when snow contacts Water, the water is replaced with Ice. Ice is burnable back to water with flame, but it is not launchable and it will stall a launcher well or a pump intake. A pretty snowfall over your starter lake is how Starter Factory layouts die on day two. Wall Frostbed shafts away from wetting pools. If snow is already falling, melt a channel and roof the lake before you add more sand.
Snow plus Lava equals Scoria
Official Snow text: snow on Lava turns the lava into Scoria and the snow disappears. That is a heat relocation tool, not a water recipe — you lose the snow and you gain a solid you can blast into Cinder and remelt later (Lava, Scoria, and Cinder). Useful when a lava trench threatens the greenhouse. Useless when you were trying to refill buckets.
Why this matters more in Early Access
The demo taught many players to invent water with rockets. Lantto’s EA messaging and launch-week playthroughs treat automated water as a solved design: steam rain, pipes, and this snow burn loop. The paid map is much larger than the demo slice, so a single surface lake will not last a long run. If you ignore Frostbed until the pit is dry, you will spend an hour hunting ice caves with an empty wallet. Put snow on the same mental list as slag: a byproduct that becomes income if you route it.
Factory layouts that use Snow
Dedicated melt hall. Cryo or Frostbed feed → short belt → flamethrower or lava ember (careful) → water tank → Pipes to the mixer. Keep the hall colder than the burn trench so steam does not fight you.
Emergency cryo. Tools 3 in the hotbar when a lava leak starts. Freeze, haul Scoria, remelt elsewhere. Do not cryo the slag press window.
Ice biome commute. Melt a walking channel with the flamethrower; do not wet-sand on exposed ice. Dig Deeper and Lights belong on that trip.

Early Access caveat
If a patch adds another renewable water recipe, this page will say so. Until then, treat “I will just find another lake” as a demo habit. The planet is destructible; lakes are not infinite. Snow is.
