Sandustry Early Game Tips
The habits that turn a messy first pit into a gold line that funds Research.
The first two hours of Sandustry decide whether Early Access feels like a factory game or a physics toy you fight. You land with a shovel, a pile of Sandsoil, and a research wallet that only moves when Gold sits in a Collector. These tips are the ones launch-week players keep repeating — they match the official material rules and the live 2026-08-13 Early Access build on Steam, GOG, Microsoft Store, and PC Game Pass. Pair this page with Getting Started if you want a checklist, or How to Play if you still need the loop in one sitting.
Tip 1 — Prove the gold loop before you decorate
Mine Sand from Sandsoil, mix it with Water (one Sand plus one Water becomes two Wet Sand), and drop Wet Sand on a diagonal Shaker. Gold falls through at roughly 20–25% per pass; Slag slides off. Until that line runs for several minutes without you babysitting every pixel, do not spend gold on drones, planters, or a prettier wall. The How to Get Gold page is the deep dive; this tip is the discipline: income first.
Tip 2 — Build Shakers on a diagonal, not a flat shelf
Flat shaker spam is the most common first-hour mistake. The grate needs a slope so gold can fall while slag continues sideways. One or two well-fed diagonal shakers beat a row of starved flats. When you copy the line, copy the angle as well as the building.
Tip 3 — Gold only counts inside a Collector
Yellow pixels on dirt, on a belt, or under a grate are easy to see and easy not to bank. A Collector registers gold toward Research. Official notes add a second rule: the box needs a solid foundation under it. Floating collectors on a half-built platform will look full and still starve your wallet. Put a collector under every shaker gold drop and under the Kinetic Slag Press later. Details live on Collectors and Lights.
Tip 4 — Never delete Slag
Slag is the second gold stream, not trash. Burn it with a Flamethrower (Tools 1) or Lava into Burnt Slag, then drop Burnt Slag on a Kinetic Slag Press (Refining 2). Each clean press hit also drops a Spore for the later flower line. If you vacuum slag into a void, you are deleting research. Store it. Slag Processing shows the burn-and-press layout.
Tip 5 — Unlock hover and the material scanner early
Fluxite (and some gold upgrades) buy quality-of-life that changes how you play, not just how fast you mine. Launch-week consensus is:
- Material scanner — hover the cursor over a pixel and see what it combines with.
- Grabber / carry capacity — cleanup after a clogged pit.
- Hover — fly, then (after the demo hotfix vote) phase through buildings while airborne.
Open the upgrade panel with U. Full spend order is on Fluxite Upgrades. Hover is the difference between “stuck in my own box” and “I can fix the belt.”
Tip 6 — Use the picker and the shovel before you invent a megabase
Hold F to pick the building under the cursor — the same block you already placed — instead of hunting the hotbar. AZERTY layouts map the hotbar to physical keys after Demo Hotfix 8. Dig Frostbed with the shovel when you need Snow; do not flamethrower Firn (solid snow) until you have dug it loose. Snow burned with fire becomes Water — currently the only renewable water source besides duplication tricks. That loop is on Snow, Firn, and Frostbed.
Tip 7 — A lake-plus-launcher is a better first factory than a dry box
Community starter layouts drop sand into a water body, lift Wet Sand with a Launcher, land it on diagonal shakers, catch gold in a collector, and belt slag toward a future press. That pattern is written out on Starter Factory Layout. You do not need every research node to copy the shape — you need Logistics 1 for the launcher and Refining 1 for the shaker.
Tip 8 — Research the bottleneck, not the toy
Typical first buys: Refining 1 (Shakers), then Logistics 1 (Conveyors and Launchers) when walking hurts. Next wave is Filters, Pipes, Tools 1 (Flamethrower), and Refining 2. Drones wait. The full tree is on Research Tree and the ranked list is on Research Priority. If water is the problem, pipes beat another shaker. If slag is the problem, the flamethrower beats a gun.
Tip 9 — Steam is a water pump before you have pipes
Heat water with the Flamethrower (or the Rocket Launcher’s napalm upgrade) to make Steam. Steam rises, pools on ceilings, and after about 30 seconds without a path to the sky it condenses as rain anyway. You can steer steam with blocks so it rains into a wetting pool. That is how Early Access players refill water without the old demo “rocket dupe” habit. Water, Ice, and Steam covers the phases; Water Management covers pipes.
Tip 10 — Light caves, mark Shatterstone, and do not eat snow with your lake
Lights 1 is cheap compared with digging into lava you cannot see. Shatterstone needs a Gun. Frostbed needs a shovel and drops snow that will freeze any water it touches into Ice. Keep snow and wetting pools apart unless you want a skating rink. Moss and flowers ignite from lava embers — wall the greenhouse off from the burn hall.
Demo versus Early Access in the first session
The free Steam demo (app 3490390) still teaches shakers. The paid EA map is much larger — creator footage calls it on the order of fifteen times the demo slice — and movement is faster, with automatic pixel traversal. Demo saves are not a reliable import. If you only want to test the loop, stay in the demo. If you want hover, Workshop, and the full tree, buy or use PC Game Pass (PC only; not Xbox consoles or Cloud). Launch Week Notes and Should You Buy Sandustry spell out the storefronts.
A first-evening sequence that actually works
- Learn S, R, X, and Shift on Keyboard Shortcuts.
- Mine a sand buffer next to water.
- Unlock Refining 1, place two diagonal shakers, park a Collector on a solid floor.
- Unlock Logistics 1 when hauling is the bottleneck.
- Unlock Flamethrower, burn slag, then Refining 2 for the press.
- Spend first Fluxite on scanner, capacity, and hover.
- Only then dig for RedSand, flowers, and the Flux Emanator.
If you skip steps 3–5 to chase artifacts, you will return to a dry shaker and an empty wallet. Sandustry rewards a readable pit. Keep Materials and Buildings open when a pixel does something you did not expect — the scanner upgrade makes that habit instant.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common Sandustry questions.
What is the most important early-game tip in Sandustry?
Should I buy hover or the flamethrower first?
Hover (Fluxite / movement upgrades) if you are stuck in your own buildings. Flamethrower (Tools 1) if slag is piling up. Both beat drones. See Fluxite Upgrades and Tools and Weapons.
Why is my gold not adding to Research?
Gold must sit in a Collector with a solid foundation underneath. Floor nuggets do not count. Debug steps are on Collectors and Lights.
How do I get more water in Early Access?
Burn Snow from Frostbed or a Cryoblaster, or boil water into Steam and catch the rain. Pipes come after Pipes 1 research.
Is the Steam demo enough to learn these tips?
Yes for shakers, collectors, and slag. Hover, the larger map, and the full research tree are in the paid Early Access build — compare on Demo vs Early Access.
