Dig Deeper in Sandustry

Vertical mining, deep Sandsoil, and factory spines that keep gold flowing from the bottom of the map.

Dig Deeper in Sandustry

Surface Sandsoil teaches Sandustry’s loop; depth scales income, difficulty, and layout complexity. Press S to descend, carve shafts toward richer underground biomes, and stretch Conveyors, Launchers, and Pipes into vertical spines that feed the same Wet Sand → Shaker → Gold refinery you built on day one. This guide covers when to dig, how to structure drop shafts, and how deep mines interact with Water Management, Slag Processing, Automation Basics, and Artifacts and Puzzles.

Why depth matters

Deeper layers typically offer:

  • Higher Sandsoil density — more sand per minute for the same dig time.
  • New biomes — different hazards, water tables, lava pockets, puzzle rooms.
  • Artifact placements — rewards gated behind exploration (Artifacts and Puzzles).

Depth does not replace factory skill. A deep hole without shakers is just a hole.

Preconditions before a major dig

Checklist:

Vertical shaft design

Treat every deep project as three parallel columns in one shaft or adjacent shafts:

ColumnPurpose
Sand liftLauncher stairs or conveyor zig-zag from dig face to refinery
Water downPipe main from surface source to lower mixers (Water Management)
Player ladderPlatforms, grapple paths, light every N tiles

Separating sand and water in the same open trench causes clumps and floods. Pipe water; belt or launcher sand.

Launcher stairs

Common pattern: dig face → hopper bin → launcher → catch bin → next launcher → repeat until surface refinery input. Use Shift skip on outlets when stacking launchers (Keyboard Shortcuts).

Test each stage with one sand bucket before connecting continuous mining.

Conveyor ramps

Alternating conveyor runs with small drop chutes save launcher count but need wider shafts. Good when biome is stable rock; bad when lava pockets breach walls.

Mining face workflow

At the active dig face:

  1. Light the face — mob and hazard visibility.
  2. Dig Sandsoil into a bounded bin, not infinite void.
  3. Feed lift continuously or on timer if using Digger drones (Automation Basics).
  4. Extend shaft only after lift keeps up — backlog at the face means widen bin or add launcher tier.
  5. Probe sideways for artifacts when sand income is stable (Artifacts and Puzzles).

Press R to toggle linear vs rectangular dig scaffolding when flooring temporary work platforms.

Water at depth

Underground water tables flood lower mines without Pumps and Vents (Water Management). Plan:

  • Header tank at surface feeding pressurized pipe column.
  • Branch tees at each refinery floor that needs mixers.
  • Drain sumps with vents so accidental breaks do not fill the entire shaft.

Deep mixers can supply Wet Sand locally instead of lifting wet sand — often cheaper than launching sticky wet sand upward.

Slag and burn placement deep down

Running slag from deep shakers up to surface burn lanes is expensive. Options:

  • Local shaker + local press on a mid-level floor; lift Gold only (smaller particle priority).
  • Deep burn hall near natural Lava (Slag Processing) with burnt slag press on same floor.
  • Surface-only refinery if dig is temporary — accept hauler drones until logistics catch up.

Compare slag volume with Production Ratio Helper before committing to a deep press room.

Hazards and tools

Deep biomes introduce lava, void, enemies, and tight physics:

  • Flamethrower / Lava — intentional for slag, deadly for players without escape blocks.
  • Cryoblaster — crowd control in hostile caves (Tools research).
  • Guns — when combat interrupts mining shifts.
  • Vacuum — recover sand or gold after cave-ins.

Always leave a retreat scaffold upward before cutting into unknown pockets.

Multi-floor factory stacks

Advanced players run stacked refineries:

  • Floor N: dig face + sand bins
  • Floor N+1: mixers + wet sand belts
  • Floor N+2: diagonal shakers + gold pits
  • Floor N+3: slag burn + press

Gold and research output merge on Materials accounting — one research tree, many floors.

When to stop digging deeper

Pause vertical expansion when:

  • Launcher chain latency exceeds shaker starvation tolerance.
  • Water pipes cannot keep mixers fed.
  • Slag backlog grows faster than burn capacity.
  • You lack gold for the next safety research (Lights, Grapple, Filters).

Horizontal expansion on the same depth often beats reckless depth for gold per minute.

Connecting to surface economy

Deep mines should increase surface research speed, not pause it. Route extra gold upward, fund Refining 2, Drones, and Planter Boxes if desired. If deep sand floods surface shakers because belts merge wrong, add Filters before digging again.

Early Access launch context

Sandustry enters Early Access 2026-08-13 on Steam, GOG, Microsoft Store, and PC Game Pass (Lantto Games / Hooded Horse). The Steam demo offers shallower maps for practice. Biome depth and hazard density may change in patches — confirm on Release Date and Platforms.

Modding deep worlds

Fluxloader mods may alter world generation or infinite depth flags. Vanilla advice assumes official EA generation.

Dig deeper progression summary

  1. Automate surface gold (Getting Started).
  2. Build launcher spine prototype ten tiles deep.
  3. Add water pipe column and lights.
  4. Establish mid-level mixers or surface wet sand lift — pick one strategy.
  5. Branch sideways for artifacts when lift is stable.
  6. Add deep slag burn or surface slag belt based on volume math.
  7. Repeat with wider shafts, not single-tile death chutes.

Depth is the multiplier on a factory that already tells the truth on the surface. Dig when logistics can carry the weight.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common Sandustry questions.

How do I descend quickly in Sandustry?

Press **S** to move downward and use **Grappling Hook** (Tools research) for vertical caves. Full controls on [Keyboard Shortcuts](/controls/keyboard-shortcuts/).

What is the best way to move Sand up from deep mines?

**Launcher** stairs or conveyor ramps (Logistics 1). Separate sand lift from water pipes. Details in [Automation Basics](/guides/automation-basics/).

Should I build Shakers deep or on the surface?

Either works. Deep mixers + local shakers reduce wet sand lifts; surface shakers simplify slag burn. Compare slag volume with [Slag Processing](/guides/slag-processing/).

When is it safe to dig deeper?

When automated gold runs, slag is routed, and you have **Lights** plus escape tools. Otherwise fix the factory using [Getting Started](/guides/getting-started/).

Do deeper layers have more Sandsoil?

Underground biomes generally scale sand availability and hazards. Exact layout varies by seed and EA version — see [Release Date and Platforms](/updates/release-date-platforms/).

How do Artifacts relate to deep digging?

Many **artifacts** and **puzzles** sit in lower biomes. Bring water and burn tools from [Artifacts and Puzzles](/guides/artifacts-puzzles/) when branching off main shafts.
