Flowers and Planters in Sandustry
Botanical farming for Amethelis petals — planter setup, water delivery, fire safety, and overflow storage.
Flowers are Sandustry’s alien crops — the upstream step in the Fluxite chain. Mature plants drop Amethelis petals (and some Gold) when harvested, fed into mixers, or collected from automated planter rows. Petals combine with RedSand to form Voidbloom, which the Flux Emanator converts into Fluxite below its tile. This guide covers Planter Boxes, Soil, watering, the Hydro Sponge Grabber upgrade, fire hazards, and storage when petals outpace redsand mining.
Why botanical farming exists
Gold from Shakers funds research; Fluxite from the emanator funds higher-tier upgrades. Neither currency comes from flowers directly — petals are an intermediate material with their own logistics puzzle. Players who ignore planters until late game often scramble for Amethelis while sitting on gold. Starting a modest flower wing while Logistics 1 matures spreads the workload across sessions.
Read How to Get Fluxite for the full chain after petals leave the farm.
Unlocking Planter Boxes
Planter Boxes arrive on the research tree alongside farming-related branches (exact node names vary by build — cross-check Research Priority Tier List). You need:
- Gold for the research purchase.
- Soil tiles or imported Soil material for box fill.
- Water delivery — gravity pools, Pipes, or sponge tools.
- Safe terrain away from uncontrolled Fire, Embers, and Lava.
Early Access (2026-08-13, Steam/GOG/Microsoft Store/PC Game Pass) expands farming alongside deeper RedSand biomes. The free Steam demo teaches basics with possible caps.
Building a planter row
Standard layout:
- Planter Boxes in a line on stable flooring.
- Fill with Soil to the depth the box requires.
- Plant or spawn Flowers per your build’s interaction rules.
- Route Water to root zones — overhead drip, side pools, or piped feeders (Water Management).
- Collection belt, chest, or Grabber tool lane beneath or beside boxes for Amethelis drops.
Keep planter rows above ground if you rely on the Hydro Sponge Grabber — Hotfix 8 restricts that grabber variant to above-ground use only (Demo Patches). Underground farms need pipes or manual watering instead.
Hydro Sponge Grabber (Hotfix 8)
The Hydro Sponge Grabber tool variant waters crops and can interact with sponge mechanics for above-ground botanical lines. After Hotfix 8 (2025-02-21), it does not work underground — plan surface greenhouses or pipe water into cavern farms without relying on sponge grabbers below the surface.
Pair sponge tools with Lock Hotbar (also Hotfix 8) so botanical hotbar slots stay fixed while you alternate between Grabber, water tools, and harvest weapons (Keyboard Shortcuts).
Flower algorithm and Hotfix 8
Hotfix 8 revised the flower algorithm — petal drop timing, growth ticks, or spread rules may differ from pre-patch footage. If your farm underproduces after updating the demo, rebuild one test box before scrapping a large wing. Document the patch date when comparing YouTube layouts to live play.
Fire, Embers, and Moss
Embers can ignite Moss and Flowers, wiping rows that took real research gold to build. Hotfix 8 explicitly notes embers igniting moss and flowers — treat fire as a farming hazard, not only a slag-burn tool.
Mitigations:
- Separate planter platforms from Flamethrower burn lanes (Slag Processing).
- Floor with non-flammable tiles where possible.
- Keep Water or sponge tools ready for emergency dousing.
- Do not route Lava overflow paths through greenhouse floors.
From Flowers to Amethelis storage
Amethelis piles behave like other mid-density materials — they sink, clog narrow vents, and overflow when RedSand mixing cannot keep up. Build:
- Dedicated Amethelis chests or wide catch floors.
- Filter reject lanes returning petals to storage (Voidbloom and Amethelis).
- Hauler Drones for overflow when belts cannot reach (Drones).
Petal overflow after RedSand depletion is a sign to expand mining, not to plant more flowers. See RedSand and Fluxite for bottleneck fixes.
Mixing toward Voidbloom
Once petals accumulate, combine Amethelis with RedSand in a controlled mixer or drop chute — similar physics to wetting sand. Route output Voidbloom to the single Flux Emanator (Flux Emanator). Do not dump voidbloom on gold Shakers; shakers want Wet Sand only.
Scaling the farm
Add planter boxes incrementally:
- Match new flower output to measured RedSand feed rate.
- Use Production Ratio Helper when integrating botanical ratios with gold lines.
- Automate harvest with tools ranked on Tools and Weapons Priority.
Six boxes producing petals while one redsand belt limps along creates pretty storage screenshots and zero Fluxite.
Demo vs EA farming scope
The Steam demo (app 3490390) introduces planters and partial fluxite chains; EA adds depth and upgrade sinks. Single-player only — no shared farms. Modded maps (Custom Maps) may alter soil or flower rules; verify readme before copying wiki layouts.
Session checklist
- Planter boxes filled with Soil and watered.
- Amethelis route to storage or voidbloom mixer.
- Fire break between greenhouses and slag burners.
- RedSand feed matched to petal rate.
- Flux Emanator fed and clearance below verified.
Flowers are the prettiest bottleneck in Sandustry — respect RedSand scarcity and the farm prints upgrade currency.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common Sandustry questions.
What do Flowers drop in Sandustry?
**Flowers** drop **Amethelis** petals and some **Gold**. Petals mix with **RedSand** to form **Voidbloom** for the [Flux Emanator](/buildings/flux-emanator/) — see [How to Get Fluxite](/guides/how-to-get-fluxite/).
How do Planter Boxes work?
Place **Planter Boxes**, fill with **Soil**, add **Water**, and grow **Flowers**. Route **Amethelis** to storage or voidbloom mixing — details in [Water Management](/guides/water-management/).
Does Hydro Sponge Grabber work underground?
No after **Hotfix 8** — **Hydro Sponge Grabber** is **above ground only**. Use pipes or manual water for cavern farms ([Demo Patches](/updates/demo-patches/)).
Why did my flowers burn down?
**Embers** ignite **Moss** and **Flowers**. Keep farms away from slag burn lanes and **Flamethrower** tests ([Slag Processing](/guides/slag-processing/)).
What if I have too many Amethelis petals?
Expand **RedSand** mining or reduce planter count. Store overflow in dedicated chests — [Voidbloom and Amethelis](/materials/voidbloom-amethelis/) explains mixing and storage.
