Sandustry Collectors and Lights

Gold that is not in a Collector may not count — and caves you cannot see will eat your tools.

Sandustry Collectors and Lights Guide

Two unglamorous buildings decide whether your factory feels rich: the Collector (often called a collector box) and Lights. One makes Gold actually increment the research wallet. The other makes lava caves, artifact rooms, and deep Sandsoil readable so you stop digging into your own belts. Neither replaces shakers — both stop silent failures.

Collectors: gold has to sit in the box

Gold that falls on open dirt, rides a belt forever, or sits under a shaker grate is easy to see and easy not to count. The Collector is the inventory building that registers nuggets toward Research spending. Beginner footage shows wallets jumping only after gold is parked in the box, then stalling when the box is full or the belt overshoots.

Practical rules:

  • Place a Collector under each shaker gold drop and under the Kinetic Slag Press gold catch.
  • If the box fills, gold overflows onto the floor and your income looks high while Research stays poor. Add a second box, a drain belt, or spend the wallet.
  • Do not share one tiny Collector between a full shaker bank and a three-press slag hall. Split by wing.
  • Filters can keep Slag and Spores out of the gold box. Spores especially will stack and crowd nuggets (Spores and Seeds).

Collectors are not magic vacuum chests for every pixel. They are wallet infrastructure. Route Fluxite crystals with tools or catch floors, not by hoping the gold box eats crystals (Flux Emanator).

When the wallet “stops”

Debug in this order:

  1. Are nuggets inside a Collector, or on the ground beside it?
  2. Is the box jammed with slag, wet sand, or spores?
  3. Are you looking at demo vs EA wallets on different installs (Demo vs Early Access)?
  4. Did a belt reverse after a Ctrl replace (Hotfix 8) and dump gold into a pit?

Fix routing before you assume Research costs changed. Cost tables live on Research Checklist.

Lights: depth without guesswork

Lights 1 research unlocks placeable Lights. Deep shafts, lava glow that lies about safe tiles, and artifact interiors all punish unlit mining. Lights also mark hazard zones so you do not drag Flowers through an ember path.

Tips:

  • Light the press drop, lava pit, and emanator shaft first — those are where misclicks delete a run.
  • Combine Lights with Gun flares when you need a temporary view down a hole you have not wired yet (EA first-impression streams show flare guns used this way).
  • Lights are cheap compared with a missed Cryoblast that floods a hall with the wrong phase of water/lava (Lava, Scoria, and Cinder).
  • Do not wait for Drones 1 to start lighting. Drones navigate better in lit pits anyway (Drones).

Other utility buildings worth a mention

Official lists also include Block, Demolisher, Marquee, and Pipe Remover. You already use Marquee via Shift selection (Build Modes, Keyboard Shortcuts). Ctrl hold replaces buildings after Hotfix 8 — essential when you retrofit a Collector under an existing shaker without deleting the diagonal. Pipe Remover clears fluid mistakes without carving the whole wall.

These utilities are how you edit a factory. Collectors and Lights are how you read it.

Layout pairing with the gold loop

A compact early row: diagonal Shakers → gold fall into Collector → slag belt out. Mid-game: duplicate Collectors at the press, add Lights along the burn trench, keep spore overflow off the gold box. Late: Collector clusters per biome so a deep Fluxite harvest does not require running nuggets back to the surface by hand (Dig Deeper).

Early Access

In the Early Access build from 2026-08-13, achievements such as Gold in the Bin exist specifically to teach the Collector habit. If a Steam achievement is not popping, check the box before checking patch notes. Lights matter more as maps get larger in EA than they did in the cramped demo slice.

If the world is full of yellow pixels and Research still says you are poor, you do not have a gold problem. You have a Collector problem. Light the room, park the nuggets, then spend.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common Sandustry questions.

Why is my gold not counting in Sandustry?

Nuggets usually need to sit in a **Collector**. Gold on the floor, on belts, or mixed with spores may not increment Research.

Where should I put Collectors?

Under shaker gold drops and under the Kinetic Slag Press gold catch. Split boxes if one fills.

When do I research Lights?

Before deep lava caves and artifact rooms. Lights 1 is cheap compared with digging blind. See Research Priority.

Do Collectors store Fluxite?

Treat Collectors as **gold wallet** buildings. Harvest Fluxite crystals with tools and catch floors under the emanator.

How do I replace a Collector without deleting the shaker?

Hold **Ctrl** to override/replace buildings (Hotfix 8). Details on Demo Patches and Build Modes.
